St George’s German Lutheran Church, London

The Situation: The Church was built in 1762, founded by Dieter Beckman, a wealthy German sugar refiner living in Whitechapel, East London.  It was used by the German Lutheran community in London (which numbered 16,000 at its height in the 19th century)) from 1762 until 1996. It is now the only remaining Lutheran Church in England.  At the time it was closed, it was urgently in need of repair and renovation.

Vision/goals:The Historic Chapels Trust acquired the building. They planned to remove all damp and rot, repair the roof, conserve the historic fittings and furnishings, & install new heating, electrical and security systems. They also wanted to redecorate the outside of the Church, purchase new chandeliers, repair the organ, and install a hearing loop. They decided to create an office for the Historic Chapels Trust in the unused vestry, and offer the Church as a location for concerts, meetings, conferences & other events.

What was the funding strategy? The total cost to 2008 has been £997, 660.  The HCT created a local committee, whose members contributed to the repair scheme in various ways.  Over 100 applications were made for funding, including to City livery companies, the German community in London & local businesses. The outgoing congregation gave some donations; the main funding came from English Heritage, the Heritage Lottery Fund, the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, and St Paul’s German Evangelical Church Trust.

What lessons were learnt? It proved difficult at first to attract large enough audiences to the Church but this is improving. German businesses in the City were slow to take advantage of the conferencing facilities.

Outcomes: The building is now dry, stable, and safe. It provides the location for a wide variety of events throughout the year.  The proceeds from these events contribute to the maintenance of the Chapel.Catering for parties is provided from the pub next door.

Social Cohesion: The local organising committee, set up by the HCT, organizes an all year programme of concerts, organ recitals, talks, & exhibitions.  Weddings and some services are still held at the Church.
